Intent, Implementation and Impact

Our Vision

Our school is one family, united in love and deeply rooted in our Christian values, where together on life’s journey we flourish, striving for excellence in all that we do. Inspired by the transformation of St Paul, and enlightened by the glory of God, we will shine like stars to make the world a better place.

Our Curriculum Drivers

Our three curriculum drivers, Resilience, Independence and Aspiration shape our curriculum breadth. They are used to ensure we give our children appropriate and ambitious curriculum opportunities.

Intent

The 2014 National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages aims to ensure that all children:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • Are able to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and that they are continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

We offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious Spanish curriculum. The curriculum will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes. All pupils will be expected to achieve their full potential by encouraging high expectations and excellent standards in their foreign language learning - the ultimate aim being that pupils will feel willing and able to continue studying languages beyond key stage 2.

We are committed to ensuring that teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. We recognise that competence in another language enables children to interpret, create and exchange meaning within and across cultures.

The four key language learning skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing will be taught and all necessary grammar will be covered in an age-appropriate way across the primary phase. This will enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning.

All pupils will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating. Learning a second language will also offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, others and cultural differences. All children will be working towards becoming life-long language learners

Implementation

Children are introduced to Spanish at the beginning of KS2.  They will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes - building blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language.

Lessons offering appropriate levels of challenge and stretch will be taught to ensure pupils learn effectively, continuously building their knowledge of and enthusiasm for the language.

Lessons will support the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Children will build on previous knowledge gradually as Spanish lessons continue to revisit revise and consolidate previously learnt language skills whilst building on all four areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

In speaking, children will be engaged in conversations; they will ask and answer questions using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures. They will practise their oral and listening skills through songs and storytelling.

In reading, children will show an understanding of words and phrases previously learnt in class and will further develop their ability to understand new words through using dictionaries and vocabulary booklets.

In writing, children will show the understanding of language learnt in class by writing vocabulary and grammatical structures in simple phrases.

All activities carried out in class will be taught in real contexts where children have used the language in a meaningful and fun way.

Impact

Pupils will continuously build on their previous knowledge as they progress in their foreign language learning journey through the primary phase.

Each lesson will focus on a combination of the 5 key language learning skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar).   The last lesson in each unit focuses on the key language skills and is used to support the teacher assessment (and self-assessment from the child) of the Success Criteria for each unit of work.
